Omnisend Review: What It Does Well and Where It Stops

Omnisend is a strong, affordable email, SMS and push platform for Shopify brands with lean teams that want one tool and one bill. Standard starts at $16 a month and Pro at $59. It falls short once segments need data from many outside tools or predictive fields, and since May 2026 SMS requires Pro.

A note on where we stand before the detail. BMO Media is an Omnisend partner and a Klaviyo partner, and we run accounts on both, so we have no reason to oversell either. Omnisend published our work for Grez Way as an agency partner story, and that account is where most of the observations below come from. Neither company reviewed this post. Every Omnisend price, limit and plan rule here was read from Omnisend's own pricing page, help center and Shopify App Store listing on 28 October 2026, and the key claims link to their pages.

Omnisend claims 320+ on its site and 250+ on its Shopify listing

Read the table as a summary of fit, not a score. Omnisend is at its best when a store's segments can be built from what Omnisend already holds: orders, products viewed, carts, email and SMS engagement, and form sign-ups. Many Shopify brands under a few million dollars a year are in that position, and for them the platform does nearly everything a retention program needs, with less setup than Klaviyo and at a lower monthly price on small and mid-size lists. The weaker rows matter later in a brand's life. Predictive data and integrations decide whether a subscription brand can time replenishment by customer, or whether a brand with a loyalty app, a helpdesk and a reviews platform can segment on all three. The SMS row changed this year, and it changes the price comparison: a brand that wants texts now has to start on Pro, which makes the true entry price $59 a month before any messages are sent. On the Shopify App Store, Omnisend Email Marketing and SMS holds a 4.7 rating from 3,194 reviews, with 89% of ratings at five stars, which fits the strong rows.

What Omnisend does well

Automation is the core of the product, and it is well built. One builder holds email, SMS and push steps in the same workflow, with exit conditions, conditional splits, A/B testing, frequency capping and event-based triggers. The 15+ preset workflows cover welcome, abandoned cart and checkout, browse and product abandonment, transactional messages, post-purchase sequences, reactivation and birthdays. That matters because the money in an Omnisend account sits in workflows, and Omnisend's own data shows how much. Across 150,000 brands and 27 billion emails sent in 2025, automations were 2% of email sends but 30% of email-driven revenue, and each automated email earned $2.87 per send against $0.18 for a scheduled campaign, a 16x difference. Automated texts earned $0.74 per send against $0.15 for SMS campaigns, about five times as much.

Segmentation is better than its reputation. Segments are unlimited on every plan and update in real time as customer data changes. The Customer Lifecycle Map, also on every plan including Free, uses RFM analysis to place each buyer in one of eight stages: Recent customers, Loyalists, Champions, Need nurturing, High potential, At risk, Can't lose and About to lose. Stages recalculate every hour from the last 365 days of orders. For a lean team, that gives a working win-back and VIP structure on day one, without building a single segment by hand.

Support and onboarding are the other strengths. Live chat and email support run 24/7 on every plan, including Free, and Omnisend offers a free migration of automations, forms, segments and templates in up to five days. Web push is included too: 500 notifications a month on Free and unlimited on Standard and Pro, which saves a separate push app for many stores.

Where Omnisend falls short

The first limit is predictive data. Omnisend shows a predicted customer lifetime value on each contact's profile, but its own help center says segmentation by CLV is not currently available, and the figure cannot be exported. We found no predicted next order date field at all; the closest thing is a store-wide average of days between orders. For a brand selling replenishable products, that means replenishment timing runs on one fixed delay for everyone rather than on each customer's own cycle. The RFM stages cover churn risk in broad bands, which is useful, but they are not a per-customer probability.

The second limit is depth of data from outside tools. Omnisend's integration count depends on which of its pages you read: 320+ on its features page and 250+ on its Shopify listing. Either way, brands whose segments need subscription status, loyalty points, support tickets and review data together tend to run into custom-event work sooner on Omnisend than on Klaviyo.

The third is the Standard plan's ceiling. Standard sends up to 12 times your list size in emails each month, and when the allowance runs out, Omnisend's help center says you cannot send campaigns and contacts who trigger automations are cancelled from workflows until the cycle renews or you upgrade. A brand that sends daily in November can hit that wall. Advanced Reporting, which compares email and SMS results, is also Pro only.

Last, Omnisend's own pages disagree with each other. On 28 October 2026 the pricing page FAQ still said the Free plan includes SMS and that Pro carries bonus SMS credits equal to the monthly bill, while the plan comparison table and the help center said neither is true. The help center is current; read it, not the FAQ.

Omnisend pricing in 2026

Omnisend has four plans: Free, Standard, Pro and Custom. Free covers up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Standard starts at $16 a month and Pro at $59, and both rise with the number of billable contacts. Custom has no public price and is aimed at stores with more than 150,000 active profiles. The table shows the regular monthly price and the discounted price for the first three months at four list sizes, read from the pricing calculator on 28 October 2026.

Three rules decide what you actually pay. First, the discount: the lower price is 30% off for the first three months, it requires paying three months upfront, it can be used once, and the pricing page shows the discounted figure by default, so budget on the regular price. Second, who counts: Omnisend bills subscribers and non-subscribers who received automated messages, which includes buyers who skipped the marketing checkbox, cart and browse abandoners and imported contacts without an opt-in date. Only people who unsubscribed are excluded. A store with 10,000 subscribers and 4,000 abandoners who got automated messages is billed on 14,000. Third, the tier moves by itself: the pricing tier changes automatically each billing cycle based on the billable contact count, so a big list-growth month raises the next bill. Pro is unlimited on email, with a fair-use cap of 60 times the list. At 2,500 contacts, Pro and Standard are $15 apart, which is why we move most growing accounts to Pro early: it adds unlimited sends, Advanced Reporting, personalized recommendations and SMS access for the difference. Prices are in US dollars and exclude VAT, and an account expert is included once spend reaches $400 a month.

Omnisend SMS after the May 2026 change

On 4 May 2026 Omnisend changed how SMS is sold. Anyone who subscribed to a paid plan on or after that date must be on Pro to send texts, and Pro no longer includes SMS credits, so SMS is bought as a separate subscription and billed apart from the email plan. Omnisend presented the change as a price drop, and the per-message rates did fall: US texts now cost $0.009 each when monthly SMS spend is $10 to $49.99, $0.0085 from $50 to $999.99, $0.008 from $1,000 to $9,999.99 and $0.007 above $10,000. The legacy rate it replaced was $0.015 per US text.

Here is what that means in practice. A brand sending 10,000 US texts a month spends in the $50 to $999.99 band, so it pays $0.0085 a text, or about $85, on top of the Pro plan. Texts longer than 160 characters bill as two or more messages, so a 200-character text doubles that to about $170. MMS costs three times the SMS rate and works only in the US and Canada, where a verified toll-free number is required to send at all. Credits expire after 60 days, so buying large blocks ahead of a slow month wastes money.

Existing accounts were handled in two ways. Standard and Free users who already had an SMS subscription before 4 May keep legacy rates while they keep that setup, but cannot resubscribe on Standard if they cancel. Legacy Pro was retired on 26 October 2026, and those brands were given an SMS subscription sized on their last 30 days of use, and six months of price protection may apply where the move raised costs by more than 20%. What a good Omnisend account looks like: Grez Way

The account behind most of this review is Grez Way, and Omnisend published the results itself in its agency partner story on BMO Media. Grez Way came to us wanting more engagement and revenue at a lower cost per send, with better deliverability. The fix was to send less. Within the first month the account sent 387,000 fewer messages, open rates rose 25%, click rates rose 8% and the placed order rate improved by 0.35%. After two months the account had produced $1.5M in additional revenue, which Omnisend's story attributes to improved deliverability and more intentional segmentation.

We use the same method on the Omnisend accounts we take on, and none of it needs a plan upgrade. We cut campaign sends to contacts who had stopped opening, which is what lifted the open rate: inbox providers reward a sender whose recipients engage. We split the list into engagement tiers and moved long-quiet contacts to a sunset path, which protects placement for everyone still reading. We rebuilt the workflows in revenue order, starting with welcome, cart and checkout, each with exits for buyers so nobody gets a reminder after they order. And we used the Customer Breakdown reports to find which lifecycle stages were worth a campaign at all. Stephanie Contreras, our Senior Lifecycle and Partnerships Manager, told Omnisend: "One of my favorite tools is the Customer Breakdown tab." The point for a buyer reading this review is that Omnisend's tools were enough to produce that result. What changed was how the account was run, which is the work our Omnisend agency does every week.

Omnisend vs Klaviyo and the other alternatives

Most brands reading an Omnisend review are choosing between Omnisend and one of five alternatives. The table sets out where each fits, from our experience running them and from each vendor's own pages.

Platform

Best fit

Where it falls short

Omnisend

Lean Shopify teams that want email, SMS, push and forms in one tool on one bill

No segmentable predictive fields; SMS needs Pro; fewer deep integrations

Klaviyo

Brands whose segments use data from many tools, with predicted CLV, next order date and churn risk

Cost climbs with active profiles; more setup and skill to run well

Mailchimp

Newsletter-led businesses and simple stores

Ecommerce automation and SMS trail the ecommerce-first platforms

Shopify Messaging

New stores sending basic email and SMS from Shopify admin

Basic reporting and testing; growing brands often outgrow it once flows matter

ActiveCampaign

Businesses that also want CRM and sales automation

Its pricing page and FAQ disagree on which plan includes Shopify

Postscript

Shopify brands that want a specialist SMS platform

SMS-first; email launched in 2026 and is newer than its SMS product

The comparison that matters most is Omnisend against Klaviyo, and the honest answer depends on data, not features. Both platforms run the same core workflows. The difference shows up when a segment needs a field Omnisend does not expose: a predicted next order date for replenishment, churn risk as a number, or event data from a subscription app and a loyalty app in the same condition. Klaviyo handles those natively; on Omnisend they take custom events or cannot be built. Price runs the other way. Omnisend's pricing page claims savings of up to 35% against Klaviyo, comparing Omnisend Standard with Klaviyo's email plan at May 2026 rates, and on lists under 25,000 contacts we usually see Omnisend come in cheaper. Our full Klaviyo review covers the other side of that trade, and our Klaviyo partner agency team runs migrations in both directions. If you are still deciding between Omnisend and a general email tool, our Omnisend vs Mailchimp comparison prices both at real list sizes.

Should you stay on Omnisend or move?

Most brands that ask us this should stay, and the test takes ten minutes. Stay on Omnisend if three things are true: workflows already carry a large share of email revenue, your segments run on store and engagement data that Omnisend already holds, and a lean team values one tool over a deeper one. In that position, a move costs months of rebuilding and deliverability warm-up to gain features you would not use.

Move when the data outgrows the platform. The clearest signals are a subscription or replenishment business that needs to time messages by each customer's predicted next order, segments that depend on loyalty, subscription and support data together, and a team that has started exporting lists to build segments elsewhere. If two of those apply, the cost of staying is showing up in revenue per send.

Whichever way you go, plan the move outside peak season and treat history as lost. Omnisend's own migration page recommends exporting historical reports as PDFs before switching, because they do not transfer. Rebuild consent records carefully, especially SMS consent, since a text sent without stored consent is a legal risk, not a deliverability one. If you run SMS on Omnisend today, our SMS marketing agency team can move texts to a specialist platform without losing subscribers. And if you stay, start with the cheapest fixes: exits on every workflow, a sunset rule for contacts who stopped opening, and engagement tiers on every campaign. Omnisend's story credits Grez Way's gains to improved deliverability and more intentional segmentation, which is what those three settings target.

The first five settings we change in an Omnisend account

A review should say how to get the most from the tool, so here is the order we work in on a new Omnisend account, and why each step comes where it does.

  1. Engagement tiers before anything else. Every campaign and workflow inherits the segment it sends to, so we build tiers by recent opens, clicks and orders first and stop sending to contacts who have not engaged in months.

  2. Exits on every workflow. A buyer who orders should leave the cart and browse workflows at once. Missing exits are the most common fault we find, and fixing them costs nothing.

  3. SMS only where intent is highest. Texts go into cart and checkout workflows before any SMS campaign, because automated texts earned about five times as much per send as campaigns in Omnisend's 2025 data.

  4. Attribution set honestly. Since October 2026 Omnisend lets you exclude Apple Mail Privacy Protection opens from sales attribution, and we switch that on so reported revenue reflects real engagement.

  5. A plan check every quarter. Billable contacts include non-subscribers, so we review the count and the Standard send cap before peak season rather than discovering the limit in November.

None of those five settings needs a developer, and only the SMS step needs Pro on newer accounts, which is the strongest argument for Omnisend: a lean team can run a serious program on it. Where they stop being enough is the point to revisit the stay-or-move test above. If you want a second opinion on your own account before you decide, we audit Omnisend accounts and give a written answer either way.

Frequently asked questions

Is Omnisend free?

Yes, for small lists. The Free plan sends up to 500 emails a month to a maximum of 250 contacts, plus 500 web push notifications, with 24/7 live chat and email support. New accounts cannot buy SMS on Free; since 4 May 2026, SMS needs the Pro plan.

How much does Omnisend SMS cost?

SMS is sold only on Pro, with no included credits. In the US the rate is $0.009 per message at the entry spend band and falls to $0.007 once monthly SMS spend passes $10,000. MMS costs three times the SMS rate and is available in the US and Canada only.

Is Omnisend better than Klaviyo?

For a lean team that wants email, SMS, push and forms in one tool at a lower price on a small or mid-size list, often yes. For segments that depend on data from many outside tools, or flows timed by predicted next order date, Klaviyo is usually the better fit.
