Email Marketing
Klaviyo Review: An Agency's Verdict on Features, Fit and Cost

Sammy Tran

Klaviyo is one of the strongest email and SMS platforms for Shopify brands whose revenue depends on segmentation and automated flows, and one of the more expensive as a list grows. The Email plan starts at $20 a month and Marketing at $90. Skip it if you sell prescriptions or telehealth, which its policy bans, or only send newsletters.
Where we stand, before the detail. BMO Media is a Klaviyo partner, and most of the accounts we run are on Klaviyo, so read this review knowing we like the platform. We are also an Omnisend partner and build on several other platforms, so we see clearly where Klaviyo is the wrong choice, and this review says so. Klaviyo did not review this post. Every Klaviyo price, limit and policy below was read from Klaviyo's own pricing page, help center, legal pages and Shopify App Store listing on 28 October 2026, and the key claims link to their sources.
Our verdict at a glance
Area | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
Flows and automation | Excellent | Flows produce nearly 41% of email revenue from 5.3% of sends in Klaviyo's 2026 data |
Segmentation and data | Excellent | Segments on any event or property; predicted CLV, churn risk and next order date on Marketing |
Integrations | Very strong | 350+ to 400+, depending on which Klaviyo page you read |
SMS | Strong, repriced | Per-message dollar pricing since 13 July 2026; carrier fees built into the rate |
Pricing | High as lists grow | Billed on every emailable profile, not only subscribers |
Support | Good on paid plans | 24/7 email and 24/5 human chat on paid plans; Free gets 60 days of email support |
Ease of use | Steep at first | Powerful builder, but the payoff needs setup skill |
Regulated health brands | Not allowed | Its policy bars health information, PHI, telehealth and prescription offers |
The table is a fit summary, not a score. Klaviyo wins wherever the money depends on using customer data well: which product someone viewed, when they are likely to reorder, whether they joined a loyalty program, what they bought last time. That describes many Shopify brands past their first year, which is why so many land on it. On the Shopify App Store, Klaviyo: Email Marketing and SMS holds a 4.7 rating from 3,416 reviews, with 88% of ratings at five stars and 8% at one star. Read the one-star reviews before you sign, alongside the pricing and support rows above. The scale is real too. Klaviyo reported Q2 2026 revenue of $370.6 million, up 26% year on year, and more than 205,000 customers, so the product is not going anywhere. The hard row is the last one. If you sell GLP-1 programs, prescriptions or any telehealth service, Klaviyo is not an option at all, whatever its other strengths, and you should stop reading this review and look at the alternatives section below. For everyone else, the question is not whether Klaviyo is good but whether your list and team will use what you pay for.
What Klaviyo does well
Flows are the reason to buy Klaviyo, and its own benchmark shows why. Across more than 183,000 Klaviyo customers, flows generate nearly 41% of total email revenue from just 5.3% of sends, and flow revenue per recipient is nearly 18 times that of campaigns. Nearly 48% of flow email revenue comes from new buyers, against 16% for campaigns. Those numbers describe the platform's design: triggers on any Shopify event, conditional splits on any profile property, and A/B branches inside each flow so every message can be tested against the version it replaced.
Data depth is the second reason. Klaviyo segments on events and properties from Shopify and from the apps around it, and Klaviyo's own pages put the integration catalog at 350+ or 400+ depending on the page. On the Marketing plan, predictive analytics adds predicted customer lifetime value, churn risk and an expected date of next order per customer, retrained at least weekly, once an account has at least 500 customers with orders, 180 days of order history, orders in the last 30 days and some repeat buyers with three or more orders. That expected date is what lets a replenishment flow fire on each customer's own cycle instead of one fixed delay for everyone.
Third, Klaviyo keeps adding products a retention team would otherwise buy separately. Customer Hub gives shoppers a signed-in space for orders, returns, subscriptions and loyalty on the brand's own store. Customer Agent, its AI service agent, was broadly released in September 2025, and Composer, its AI marketing agent, reached public beta in June 2026. We use the AI tools for drafts and speed, and still check every segment definition before a send.
Where Klaviyo falls short
Cost is the first complaint, and it comes from how Klaviyo counts. Billing is based on active profiles, which Klaviyo defines as any profile, regardless of consent status, that can be emailed through Klaviyo. That includes people who entered an email at checkout without opting in, and active does not mean they recently opened or bought. If the profile count at the end of a billing cycle exceeds your plan, you are moved to a higher plan for the next cycle. Cutting profiles does not lower the bill by itself either: you have to choose a lower tier or turn on auto-downgrade. A list that grew on giveaways and never got cleaned is the most expensive kind of list to hold in Klaviyo.
Support is the second. Paid plans get email support 24/7 and human chat 24/5, but the Free plan gets email support only for the first 60 days after sign-up, and dedicated onboarding or a customer success manager comes only with the highest tiers. In our experience, brands that rely on Klaviyo get their strategic help from an agency or an in-house specialist, not from Klaviyo.
Third, the platform rewards skill. The same flexibility that makes flows earn also makes it easy to build an account that nobody can maintain: duplicate flows, overlapping segments, Smart Sending left on where it should be off. Fourth, Klaviyo's Acceptable Use Policy, updated 9 April 2026, prohibits sending health information, including HIPAA protected health information, and bars using Klaviyo to offer prescription medications, telehealth and related services. We found no Klaviyo page that offers a business associate agreement. Last, Klaviyo's own pages disagree on details such as the integration count, and the Shopify listing still described SMS in credits on 28 October, three months after the switch to dollar pricing. When pages conflict, trust the help center.
Klaviyo pricing in 2026
Klaviyo now sells three self-serve plans: Free, Email and Marketing. Free covers up to 250 active profiles, 500 emails a month and $5 of mobile messages. Email starts at $20 a month for 500 profiles. Marketing starts at $90 and bundles email with Social marketing and Customer Hub, and adds predictive analytics, onsite personalization, loyalty and order tracking; mobile push and in-app messages come on every plan. Above 150,000 active profiles both plans move to custom pricing. The table shows the US monthly price at six list sizes, read from the pricing page slider on 28 October 2026.
Active profiles | Email plan | Marketing plan | Emails a month on Email |
|---|---|---|---|
500 | $20 | $90 | 5,000 |
1,000 | $30 | $100 | 10,000 |
5,000 | $100 | $170 | 50,000 |
10,000 | $150 | $220 | 100,000 |
25,000 | $400 | $575 | 250,000 |
50,000 | $720 | $1,006 | 500,000 |
Two details in the slider matter more than the table. First, the step just past 10,000 profiles is steep on the Marketing plan: at 10,500 profiles Email goes from $150 to $175, but Marketing goes from $220 to $321, a $101 jump for 500 more profiles. A brand sitting near 10,000 should clean its list before the next cycle rather than after. Second, the Email plan is not the full product. Predictive analytics sits on Marketing, and Customer Hub is included there but costs Email users from $20 a month, so a brand that wants replenishment timed by expected next order date is buying Marketing, not Email. Add-ons are priced separately: Composer from $20 a month for 2,000 credits, Klaviyo Reviews from $25 a month for 250 orders, Personalization from $100 a month and the Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform at $500 a month for 100,000 total profiles. A limited-time offer took $19 off the first month of the $20 Email plan when we checked, which says nothing about month two. Budget on the regular price, at the profile count you will have in December, not the one you have today.

Klaviyo SMS after the July 2026 change
On 13 July 2026 Klaviyo moved SMS and other mobile messaging from credits to per-message dollar rates. New customers switched at once; existing paid subscribers moved on their first billing date after 13 August 2026. Klaviyo introduced about 70 new plan tiers, said some rates went up and some went down in the first reset since 2022, and built carrier fees into the rate instead of listing them separately. You still prepay a monthly dollar amount, unused spend does not roll over, and texts bill per segment, per recipient, so a long message costs more than a short one.
Klaviyo does not publish one fixed US rate card. The help center says the rates for your account appear in the app under billing settings. On 28 October the pricing page calculator suggested a $15 monthly plan for 1,000 US toll-free texts and a $125 plan for 10,000, with the effective cost per text falling as volume rises. A toll-free number is included, and Klaviyo recommends a short code once you send to more than 95,000 recipients a month. Overages work one of three ways: auto-upgrade to the next plan, Flex billing on larger self-service plans, or stop sending.
Our advice is the same as before the change. Put texts where intent is highest, in abandoned checkout, abandoned cart and back-in-stock flows, before you schedule a single SMS campaign, and share quiet hours and suppression with email so nobody gets the same reminder twice. If you already run SMS on Attentive or Postscript, Klaviyo email works alongside either, and our SMS marketing agency team runs both setups. Check your first invoice after the switch line by line; the tier you were moved to is the closest one at or below your old price, which is not always the right size for your volume.
What Klaviyo results look like in practice
Reviews built from a trial account cannot tell you what Klaviyo produces once it is run well, so here are figures from accounts we run, as published on our case-study pages. For Liquid Death, we built replenishment, welcome, subscription and upsell flows on Klaviyo, and in 12 months automation revenue rose 10x, the list grew 5x and overall email revenue rose 4x. Kinetic Kings came to us running basic Klaviyo flows and generic templates; after the rebuild, flow revenue rose 89% year over year and overall email revenue 105%. At Formuland, continuous testing lifted automated flow revenue by more than 50% quarter over quarter.
None of those results needed a feature the average Klaviyo account lacks. They came from the same four moves, made in the same order. We rebuild the revenue flows first: welcome, browse abandonment, cart and checkout recovery, post-purchase and win-back, each with exits for buyers. We segment campaigns by engagement so inactive contacts stop dragging down deliverability. We test every flow against the version it replaced, so the lift is measured rather than assumed. And we report flow and campaign revenue separately with the attribution window held constant, so a good month is not an artifact of a changed setting. That is the work our Klaviyo email marketing agency does every week, and it is why we tell clients the platform is rarely the problem when a Klaviyo account underperforms. The method behind the audit we run first is laid out in our Klaviyo flow audit playbook.
Klaviyo vs the alternatives
If Klaviyo is not right for you, it is usually for one of three reasons: price on a large, low-engagement list, a team too small to use its depth, or a regulated business it does not allow. The table sets out where the main alternatives fit.
Platform | Best fit | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
Klaviyo | Shopify brands whose segments use data from many tools | Cost climbs with every emailable profile; bars telehealth and prescriptions |
Omnisend | Lean teams that want email, SMS, push and forms in one tool | Predicted CLV is not segmentable; SMS needs its Pro plan |
Mailchimp | Newsletter-led businesses and simple stores | Ecommerce automation and SMS trail the ecommerce-first platforms |
ActiveCampaign | Businesses that also want CRM and sales automation | Its pricing page and FAQ disagree on which plan includes Shopify |
Shopify Messaging | New stores sending basic email and SMS from Shopify admin | Basic reporting and testing; growing brands often outgrow it |
Attentive | Large SMS programs that want a specialist platform | Prices are quoted per brand, not published |
Postscript | Shopify brands that want a specialist SMS platform | Email launched in 2026 and is newer than its SMS product |
Customer.io | Apps and regulated brands built on event data | Needs engineering time; HIPAA is an additional-cost item |
For many Shopify brands, the real choice is Klaviyo or Omnisend, and it comes down to data. If your segments need predicted next order dates or events from loyalty, subscription and support tools together, Klaviyo earns its price. If your segments run on orders and engagement alone and the team is small, Omnisend often does the same job for less; our Omnisend review covers that side in detail. Brands weighing a CRM-led tool should read our Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign comparison. Telehealth and GLP-1 brands are a separate case: they need a platform that will sign a business associate agreement and a team that knows the rules, which is what our telehealth marketing agency practice is built for. Customer.io, for example, lists HIPAA compliance as an additional-cost item on its Premium and Enterprise plans. Whichever way you go, price the move at your real profile count first.
Who should use Klaviyo, and who should skip it
Use Klaviyo if you sell on Shopify, flows already earn or should earn a large share of email revenue, and you have the people, in-house or at an agency, to run segmentation and testing every month. It is especially strong for replenishable products and subscriptions, where the Marketing plan's expected next order date pays for itself, and for brands with a loyalty, reviews or subscription app whose data should drive messages. It also suits brands planning to grow past 25,000 profiles, as long as they keep the list clean, because the integration catalog and segment logic do not run out.
Skip Klaviyo, or wait, in four cases. First, if you sell prescriptions, GLP-1 programs or telehealth, because its policy does not allow it. Second, if you only send a weekly newsletter to a list that rarely buys, because you will pay for depth you never use and a cheaper tool will do. Third, if you are under 250 contacts and not growing, because the Free plan's limits, Klaviyo branding and 60-day support window will frustrate you before the paid features help. Fourth, if your list is large and mostly unengaged, clean it before you migrate, or you will import the most expensive part of your file.
If you are already on Klaviyo and unsure whether it is earning its price, the test is simple: compare flow revenue per recipient to campaign revenue per recipient, and check what share of active profiles opened anything in the last 90 days. A healthy account shows flows far ahead and a profile count that is mostly people who still engage. If neither is true, the fix is usually in the account, not the platform.
Getting your money's worth in the first 90 days
Most of the value in a new or inherited Klaviyo account comes from a short list of changes made in the right order. This is the sequence we follow, and why each step sits where it does.
Week one, profile hygiene. Suppress profiles that have not opened or clicked in months and set the plan to the tier you need, because Klaviyo bills every emailable profile and will not lower the bill on its own.
Weeks one to four, revenue flows. Welcome, browse, cart and checkout recovery, post-purchase and win-back, each with buyer exits and an A/B branch against the old version.
Week two, Smart Sending settings. Keep it on for campaigns, and switch it off on the first abandoned cart and checkout messages, where a skipped email is a lost order.
Month two, SMS on high-intent flows only, sized to a prepaid plan that fits your real monthly volume after the July 2026 repricing.
Month three, predictive timing. If you are on Marketing and meet Klaviyo's predictive requirements, move replenishment and win-back triggers to expected next order date and churn risk.
Run that sequence and judge the account at day 90 on two numbers: flow revenue as a share of email revenue, and revenue per recipient by flow. If both rose and the profile count stayed honest, Klaviyo is earning its price. If not, an outside audit will usually find the cause in under a week, and we run those audits on Klaviyo accounts every month.

Frequently asked questions
Is Klaviyo worth the money?
For Shopify brands where flows and segmentation drive revenue, usually yes. Klaviyo's 2026 benchmarks show flows producing nearly 41% of email revenue from 5.3% of sends. It is poor value for stores that only send newsletters, or for lists full of contacts who no longer open, because billing counts every emailable profile.
How much does Klaviyo cost in 2026?
The Free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month. The Email plan starts at $20 a month for 500 profiles and the Marketing plan at $90. At 10,000 profiles they cost $150 and $220. SMS is a separate prepaid plan priced per message since 13 July 2026.
Can telehealth or GLP-1 brands use Klaviyo?
Not for that business. Klaviyo's Acceptable Use Policy, updated 9 April 2026, prohibits sending health information including HIPAA protected health information and bars using Klaviyo to offer prescription medications or telehealth services. Those brands need a platform that offers a business associate agreement.
