Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign for Ecommerce

Klaviyo vs ActiveCampaign for ecommerce: store-size fit, real pricing and the Shopify plan contradiction

Klaviyo is the better fit for a Shopify DTC store that needs native ecommerce data, revenue attribution and SMS in one account. ActiveCampaign is the cheaper entry point, starting at $15 for under 1,000 contacts (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026), and suits brands that run a sales pipeline alongside email. List size, Shopify dependence and SMS decide it.

Which platform fits which store size?

Start with the question none of the ranking comparison pages answers. Both vendors price on how many people you hold, not how much you send, so the list size you are at today and the one you expect in twelve months decide most of the bill.

Under 250 contacts, Klaviyo costs nothing and ActiveCampaign has no free plan. Klaviyo's free tier allows "up to 250 profiles" and "a maximum of 500 emails per month", with Klaviyo branding in the footer and email support for the first 60 days only (Klaviyo Help Center, free and paid plans, 4 October 2026). If you sell on Shopify, "Klaviyo Starter in Shopify" gives the same 250 profiles and 500 emails, with three automated messages live at once and one live sign-up form, under Powered by Klaviyo branding (Klaviyo Help Center, updated 21 September 2026). ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day trial with no credit card, capped at "up to 100 contacts and up to 100 emails sent" and "based on our Pro plan" (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026). That is a product tour, not a running programme.

From 250 to 1,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign has the cheaper published price. Its FAQ states "ActiveCampaign pricing starts at $15 for accounts with less than 1000 contacts" (4 October 2026). Klaviyo's product page states "Klaviyo pricing starts at $60 per month based on active profiles" (Klaviyo product page, modified 21 September 2026). The gap is real, but the Starter tier you get for $15 carries "5 actions per automation", "Limited segmentation" and "1 user" (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). A welcome series, an abandoned-cart flow and a post-purchase sequence will each meet the five-action ceiling early.

From 1,000 to 25,000 contacts, neither vendor publishes a band price we could verify. ActiveCampaign's Plus, Pro and Enterprise prices rendered as "--" on the pricing page we fetched, and Klaviyo's tier table is drawn by script and did not load. At this size, price both in-product with your real list and decide on Shopify depth and attribution, which the next two sections cover.

Above 25,000, both bill on volume, and the definition of a billable record matters more than the sticker. Klaviyo counts "any profile, regardless of consent status, that can be emailed through Klaviyo" as active (Klaviyo Help Center, billing, 25 March 2026). ActiveCampaign bills per contact and caps sends at 10 times contacts on Starter and Plus, 12 times on Pro and 15 times on Enterprise (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). A list full of unengaged but emailable profiles costs you on Klaviyo whether or not you send to them, so suppression hygiene is a budget line, not a deliverability nicety.

What do you actually pay, and what moves the bill?

Klaviyo bills on active profiles. Its help centre puts it this way: "Your monthly profile tier is based on the total number of billable profiles in your account at the time of billing" (Klaviyo Help Center, billing, 25 March 2026). Two things move you up. Profile growth moves you to the next tier at the next billing cycle, and email usage beyond your plan can trigger an automatic upgrade. Klaviyo does not publish the thresholds for either on the pages we fetched; confirm them in-product before you import a list.

The published entry point is "$60 per month" (Klaviyo product page, 21 September 2026). A pricing widget on the same page shows "$20" beside "500", which reads like a 500-profile tier, but the full table is rendered by script and we could not retrieve the band names or prices. Klaviyo does not publish its per-band prices in a form we could verify, so treat the $60 as the vendor's headline, treat the $20 as a figure to confirm in the pricing calculator, and ignore any third-party page that quotes a Klaviyo tier price without a date.

ActiveCampaign bills per contact across four tiers: Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). The FAQ still calls the third tier "Professional", so expect both names in sales conversations. Contact bands are published: under 500, 500 to 1,000, 1,000 to 2,500, 2,500 to 5,000, 5,000 to 10,000, 10,000 to 25,000, then on up to 250,000 and above (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026). The pricing page carries a "Billed annually" label, and the FAQ does not say whether the $15 figure is monthly billing or an annual-billed monthly equivalent. Confirm which before you set it against Klaviyo's $60.

ActiveCampaign's compare page claims Klaviyo "Starts at $30/month for 1,000 contacts" against its own "$15/month for 1,000 contacts" (ActiveCampaign compare page, 4 October 2026). That $30 is ActiveCampaign's description of Klaviyo, and it does not match Klaviyo's own $60 headline. Do not build a budget on a competitor's figure for the other vendor. Klaviyo publishes no ActiveCampaign comparison page at all.

Two ActiveCampaign commitments are worth holding it to in writing: "no setup costs or hidden fees" and "See results in 30 days or get your money back" (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). Klaviyo makes no money-back claim on the pages we fetched.

Does ActiveCampaign's Shopify integration come with Starter?

ActiveCampaign's own site gives two answers. The pricing page lists "Shopify, Square, & WooCommerce" against the Starter tier and reserves "Premium ecommerce integrations: BigCommerce, Magento, & Shopify Plus" for higher tiers (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). The FAQ on the same site says the Shopify integration is "available for our Plus, Professional, and Enterprise accounts" (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026). One of those pages is out of date. If you run a Shopify store and plan to buy Starter, get the answer from sales in writing before you pay, because the whole value of the purchase rests on it.

Klaviyo describes its ecommerce connections as "native integrations with ecommerce platforms like Shopify" (Klaviyo product page, 21 September 2026). Its dedicated Shopify integration page is blocked to crawlers, so we cite the product page rather than that one. ActiveCampaign's own comparison concedes the point: its compare page lists "Shopify integration" and "Ecommerce revenue attribution" as areas where Klaviyo excels (ActiveCampaign compare page, 4 October 2026). When a vendor's sales page gives ground on two of the three things a DTC retention team buys an email platform for, take it at face value.

Revenue attribution is the practical consequence. A Shopify brand running a retention programme needs each flow and campaign reported against placed orders so it can decide what to cut and what to scale. Klaviyo's product copy leads with "Email marketing that delivers wins" and "One platform for every customer journey" (Klaviyo product page, 21 September 2026). ActiveCampaign's ecommerce page targets "Retail & direct-to-consumer" and leads with "Cut 13 hours of marketing busywork each week with autonomous marketing" (ActiveCampaign ecommerce page, 4 October 2026). One is selling attributed revenue; the other is selling saved hours. That is a fair summary of who each platform is built for.

Integration counts tell the same story in a different way. ActiveCampaign's ecommerce page says "900+ app integrations" and its compare page says "1,000+ native integrations" (both 4 October 2026); Klaviyo says "Integrate with 350+ apps" (Klaviyo product page, 21 September 2026). ActiveCampaign's number is larger and inconsistent across its own pages. For a DTC store the count matters less than whether the Shopify connection is on your plan, which brings you back to the contradiction above.

How does SMS work on each after Klaviyo's July 2026 change?

Klaviyo sells SMS as a separate Mobile Messaging subscription on top of email. From 13 July 2026 Klaviyo moved "Mobile Messaging pricing from credits to per-message, dollar-based rates" (Klaviyo Help Center, Mobile Messaging update, 4 October 2026). The formula it publishes is "Rate x Recipients x Message segments = Total cost", and "Klaviyo bundles carrier fees into your plan rate". Per-country rates are shown in-product only, so the one number you need to model a US SMS budget is not on the public pages. If the comparison you are reading was written before July 2026, its Klaviyo SMS figures describe a credit model that no longer exists.

ActiveCampaign treats SMS as an add-on: "SMS Add-on: Extend your campaigns with SMS marketing automation" (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). The add-on price is not published on the pages we fetched; the /pricing/sms URL returns a 404. SMS sits alongside other paid add-ons: WhatsApp, AI Activities, Enhanced CRM, Custom Reporting and Transactional Email. The headline $15 buys email and automation, not the channel mix a DTC brand usually wants by its second year.

What this means in practice: on both platforms, SMS is a second line on the invoice that neither vendor prices publicly for the US. Klaviyo gives you a formula and bundles carrier fees; ActiveCampaign gives you an add-on with no public rate. Before you sign either, run a 1,000-recipient estimate through the in-product calculator and write the number down with the date. Our SMS programme starts every engagement with that figure, because cost per message sets send frequency, and send frequency decides whether the channel pays.

One more implication of Klaviyo's formula. The multiplier on message segments means a longer message costs more per recipient, so SMS copy length is now a cost control, not just a style choice. On ActiveCampaign, you cannot model that at all until sales gives you the add-on rate.

Where does ActiveCampaign beat Klaviyo?

A comparison that only praises Klaviyo is not credible, so here is the honest list.

Entry price. $15 for under 1,000 contacts (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026) against Klaviyo's "$60 per month" headline (Klaviyo product page, 21 September 2026). For a brand with a small list and no Shopify dependence, that is the difference between a tool and a budget line.

Guarantees. ActiveCampaign publishes "no setup costs or hidden fees" and "See results in 30 days or get your money back" (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). Klaviyo offers a free tier but no equivalent money-back promise on the pages we fetched.

Transparency of the ceiling. ActiveCampaign prints its contact bands and its send caps (10 times contacts on Starter and Plus, 12 times on Pro, 15 times on Enterprise). Klaviyo's auto-upgrade thresholds are not on its public pages. If predictability of the invoice matters more than attribution depth, ActiveCampaign is easier to budget.

Trial on full features. The 14-day trial is "based on our Pro plan" (ActiveCampaign FAQ, 4 October 2026), so you test the tier you would actually buy, even if only with 100 contacts. Klaviyo's free tier tests the free tier.

Channel add-ons for non-DTC work. WhatsApp, Transactional Email, Enhanced CRM and Custom Reporting are available as add-ons (ActiveCampaign pricing page, 4 October 2026). A brand that sells wholesale alongside DTC, or runs a sales team on the same list, gets a CRM and pipeline in the same account. ActiveCampaign's positioning line is "Helping thousands of teams punch above their weight", and the sales-team use case is where that is literally true.

Migration. ActiveCampaign offers "Complimentary agentic migration and onboarding within defined limits" (ActiveCampaign compare page, 4 October 2026). Klaviyo makes no comparable offer on the pages we fetched. Ask what the defined limits are before you count on it.

How should you decide, and what should you confirm before signing?

Four decision rules cover most DTC cases.

If you sell on Shopify and hold under 250 contacts, start on Klaviyo free or Klaviyo Starter in Shopify. It costs nothing, the data connection is native, and you will not pay $15 for a Starter plan whose Shopify entitlement its own vendor cannot state consistently.

If you do not sell on Shopify, hold under 1,000 contacts and run email plus a sales pipeline, ActiveCampaign Starter at $15 is the rational buy, with the five-action automation cap as the thing to watch.

If you sell on Shopify, hold more than 1,000 contacts and intend to run SMS, Klaviyo is the default, priced in-product with your real profile count. ActiveCampaign itself concedes Shopify integration and revenue attribution to Klaviyo, and that is the work a retention programme lives on.

If you need WhatsApp, transactional email or a CRM in the same account, ActiveCampaign with add-ons is the fit, and each add-on price has to be confirmed because none is public.

Whichever way you go, confirm five things in writing: the Klaviyo per-band price for your profile count, the Klaviyo auto-upgrade thresholds, whether ActiveCampaign's $15 is monthly or annual-billed, which ActiveCampaign tier actually includes Shopify, and the SMS rate on both. Those are the five facts neither vendor publishes in a form we could verify on 4 October 2026.

Across the Klaviyo accounts we take over, the Klaviyo-attributed share of total store revenue in the first 90 days after migration is the figure we lead with, because it turns "which platform" into "what the platform earned". Our retention email programmes team runs the migration, the flow rebuild and the attribution set-up as one project, and our Klaviyo flow audit is the first thing we run on an inherited account. If you are weighing agencies as well as platforms, the Klaviyo agency comparison sets out what to ask.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign cheaper for a small ecommerce store?

Under 250 contacts, Klaviyo is free and ActiveCampaign has no free plan. From 250 to 1,000 contacts, ActiveCampaign's published $15 start (FAQ, 4 October 2026) is below Klaviyo's $60 headline (product page, 21 September 2026), but Starter limits you to 5 actions per automation and 1 user. Above 1,000 contacts, neither vendor publishes a band price we could verify; price both in-product.

Does ActiveCampaign's Starter plan include the Shopify integration?

ActiveCampaign's pricing page lists Shopify against Starter, but its FAQ says the Shopify integration is available for Plus, Professional and Enterprise accounts (both 4 October 2026). The two pages contradict each other. Get the answer in writing from sales before buying Starter for a Shopify store.

How is Klaviyo SMS priced now?

Since 13 July 2026, Klaviyo prices Mobile Messaging per message in dollars rather than in credits, using Rate x Recipients x Message segments, with carrier fees bundled into the plan rate. The per-country rate is shown in-product only, so confirm your US rate in the account before budgeting.

Not sure which profile count or SMS rate you will actually be billed on? We pull both from the in-product calculator as the first step of a retention audit.
